Tarleton rodeo teams finish third at CNFR

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Competing in the “Rose Bowl” of College Rodeo, Tarleton’s men’s and women’s teams both captured third place at this year’s College National Finals Rodeo, while Billy Bob Brown earned the national title in team roping and this year’s All-Around Cowboy award following the 65th annual event held June 5-16, in Casper, Wyo.
The women’s team comprised of Katelyn Anthony, Cassidy Boggs, Kynder Starr and Cadee Tew collected 435 points to finish in third place among 36 teams behind this year’s national champion Idaho State University (520) and runners-up, Northeastern Junior College (490).
Tarleton’s men’s team, made up of Brown, Richmond Champion, Reese Riemer, Jake Self, Clayton Shaw, Tim Sparing and Chase Williams, also finished in third place among 58 teams with 735 points behind Panhandle State University (820) and College of Southern Idaho (745).
Two-time CNFR qualifier Brown led the standings and collected 370 points during the weeklong competition to be crowned this year’s All-Around Cowboy. Brown, a junior majoring in ag business, also had a 5.7 second run with partner Logan Medlin of Eastern New Mexico University in the short-go to be named this year’s national champion team roper. Tarleton’s Cadee Tew and ENMU’s Michael Trujillo were runners-up in the team roping event with a 6.1-second effort.
In other events, Katelyn Anthony finished fourth in the nation in the breakaway roping and won the short-go with a 2.0-second effort. Clayton Shaw won reserve champion honors in the tie-down roping and received “Horse of the Year” honors, while Kynder Starr completed her CNFR appearance in fourth place riding in the barrel race event.
This year’s appearance at the CNFR comes after Tarleton’s men’s and women’s teams captured the 2012-2013 National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s Southwest Region titles. Tarleton’s cowboys won the region with 5,845 points, while the cowgirls collected 2,730 points.
