STEPHENVILLE, Texas—After four-straight losses U.S. Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Midland, said he’s hoping to notch a victory with fellow Republicans in the annual Congressional Baseball Game by donning a Tarleton Texan jersey.

The congressman, who represents the 11th Congressional District, visited campus and was presented with his very own No. 11 Tarleton baseball jersey to wear while competing in the June 13 contest at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.

Presenting the jersey to Conaway at Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex were Tarleton head baseball coach Bryan Conger and university President F. Dominic Dottavio. Also present to greet the congressman were athletics director Lonn Reisman, head softball coach Julie Mata, the Texans’ senior pitcher Miguel Ramirez, as well as other representatives of the athletics department and Texan Club.

Conaway will take the field at first base for the GOP team in the annual partisan showdown, which pits Republicans versus Democrats in a contest that benefits several charitable organizations in the D.C. area. The contest has been held each year for members of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate since 1909.

“The baseball game is great on so many levels and it’s a great fund raiser for charities with more than 8,000 people coming out to watch the game at Nationals Park,” said Conaway. “This is the first year I’ve had the pleasure to represent Tarleton, and after calling the university they graciously agreed to let me wear one of the team’s jerseys in the game.”

Holding a 4-4 record, this year’s game will be Conaway’s ninth appearance on the diamond for the GOP. During the presentation, Conger, this year’s Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year who led the Texans to their first-ever LSC championship in school history, wished the congressman best of luck, adding “that jersey’s been hot all season and we’ll expect a win for you this year.”
