STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Stephenville High School’s FFA Chapter swept the competition during Tarleton’s 41st annual FFA Invitational Career Development Event (CDE) Judging Contest.

Among the 17 contests held on March 21, Stephenville FFA placed in eight events to earn enough points to claim the sweepstakes prize. The chapter’s teams earned the following honors: Farm Business Management, 1st place; Milk Quality & Products and Wildlife, 2nd place; Meats, 5th place; Livestock and Nursery & Landscape, 7th place; Dairy, 9th place; and Entomology, 11th place.

More than 7,000 FFA members from approximately 400 high schools across Texas participated in the CDE Judging Contest with the top team being awarded a scholarship by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. The event is dubbed the world’s largest FFA contest and serves as a practice round for chapters’ teams prior to their respective area contests.

Dr. Don Cawthon, dean of the college, presented Stephenville FFA with the $2,000 scholarship prize at the conclusion of the one-day contest during an awards assembly at Wisdom Gymnasium. Accepting the prize on behalf of the local FFA organization was chapter president Whitney Green.

In all, $20,000 in scholarships were awarded to the participating FFA chapters.

Last week’s FFA contest is the largest of three contests that Tarleton will host this spring. The university will welcome high school students again on April 10 for the Area FFA contest, and on April 18 when Tarleton hosts the State FFA contests for dairy cattle, environmental and natural resources, home site evaluation, land, milk quality and products, and range.
