Gun debate seminar scheduled

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Gun violence, gun restrictions and American public opinion will be among topics at a National Gun Debate Seminar featuring distinguished scholars Dr. J. Matthew Wilson and Dr. Lucas A. Powe Jr.

The seminar, free and open to the public, will be Thursday, April 4, 2 to 4 p.m., in Room 125 of the Math Building. It is sponsored by Dr. Jesús Velasco, the Long Endowed Chair, and the Department of Social Sciences.

Wilson is an associate professor of political science at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. His research interests include political psychology, political behavior, religion and politics and American political thought. He is currently at work on two book projects, one on the political behavior of American Catholics and another, titled The Blame Game: Political Sophistication and the Politics of Attribution, dealing with how citizens decide whom to hold accountable for social and political outcomes.

Powe is a professor of government at the University of Texas at Austin. He holds a law degree from the University of Washington and clerked for Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas. He is the author of a number of books on the U.S. legal system, including The Supreme Court and the American Elite, 1789-2008 and The Warren Court and American Politics.
