STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton has introduced a new homepage, the result of a two-year long research, planning and development project to improve Tarleton's web presence.

“With the ever-expanding numbers of device types on the market, there was a need to provide the availability of information on all types of internet-ready devices, including mobile,” said Daphne Hunt, director of web services. A research project focusing on responsive web technology was implemented by web services in conjunction with the university's Digital Media Advisory Committee.

Responsive web design provides an optimal viewing experience across a large range of devices, such as tablets, smart phones and desktops, Hunt said. Structure and content is created with the ability to automatically resize and reorganize based on the screen size of the device, thus eliminating the need for a separate mobile site and provides more consistency of look across devices, she added.

“We are in an age where most people own several different types of internet-ready devices, each of a different size,” Hunt said. “We want to make sure Tarleton’s website provides the information our users need despite the type and size of the device.”

The new design provides a graphically engaging and easy-to-navigate structure, Hunt said.

“We know there will be a period of adjustment because of these changes,” she added. “It is quite different from the old page. Our hope is that everyone will adjust and begin to see the benefits that it offers to all of our audiences.”

Web Services will continue on the project by converting the college, department and other remaining pages to the new design. It will take approximately a year and a half to complete the rest of the conversions, Hunt said.
