STEPHENVILLE, Texas—In shaping tomorrow’s leaders, Tarleton is among the most powerful economic drivers in Texas, said John Sharp, chancellor of The Texas A&M University System, in an address at Tarleton’s General Assembly Aug. 29.

The annual assembly for faculty and staff kicks off the new academic year and provides for a “state of the university” address by Tarleton President F. Dominic Dottavio.

Sharp, who was appointed chancellor of the system in September 2011, lauded Tarleton for its recent enrollment growth and praised Dottavio for his leadership and advocacy of the school. “Nobody can beg for money better than your president,” he said to laughter and applause.

Turning to the heart of his talk, Sharp said that during his time in state government, including serving as the state comptroller in the 1990s, businesses thinking of relocating to Texas didn’t ask about taxes or tax breaks. “They only wanted to know two things: the number of young people in the workforce and their educational level. And if we had to say it’s something like Mississippi, they would have said no thanks.”

Sharp said the Texas empire was built on successive waves of cattle, cotton, then oil and gas production. “We’re now building a fourth empire based on human resources, on education.”

Dottavio devoted his talk to the recently unveiled 2020 Strategic Plan. It was developed by the University Planning Council, a committee representing all areas of campus life and co-chaired by Donna Savage, university librarian, and Dr. Javier Garza, associate professor of math.

The plan has four objectives: distinctive engagement, academic innovation, student transformation and exemplary service. All the objectives will build on existing Tarleton institutes, programs and strengths, he said.

The primary aim of the Strategic Plan, the president said, was to make Tarleton “the premier student-focused university on the planet.”

After the General Assembly, Sharp toured the new facilities of the Center for Instructional Innovation. Dr. and Mrs. Dottavio then hosted a dinner for the chancellor at the Trogdon House.
