STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton’s Child Development Center is now accepting child care subsidy from the state of Texas, said Dr. Kimberlee Spencer, the center’s director.

The new program will allow low-income families to have their child care paid for by the state. The amount of the subsidy will be based on family income.

“We are excited to be able to accept the subsidy,” Spencer said. “It will provide students with affordable care so they can enroll in classes and finish their degree. We look forward to supporting students in their educational efforts and Stephenville families in their work and educational goals.”

The center is open to all area families, including Tarleton employees and students. It enrolls 24 children each year ranging in age from 18 months to 5 years.

Last year the center adopted a Texas Education Agency approved pre-K curriculum called Creative Curriculum, Spencer said. It requires child observations by the staff and the creation of lesson plans that include individual activities based on each child's strengths and areas for development. The staff also conducts assessments of each child and works with parents to promote development and school readiness.

Spencer said the center provides an opportunity for field work and observation for Tarleton students in child and family studies, education, nursing, kinesiology and psychology. “Last year we had over 400 student contact hours in the center,” Spencer said. “Some students observe the children while others interact with them. Their level of involvement depends on the instructor’s requirements for the course.”

The center is open from 7:30-5:30 Mondays through Fridays and follows the university calendar. It’s open between semesters and in the summer.
