Silver Taps to honor Tarleton's deceased

Silver Taps Ceremony

Tarleton State University

Monday, April 1, 2013

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Silver Taps, an annual observance to honor members of the Tarleton family who have passed away during the past year, will be held Thursday, April 11, at 8 p.m.

The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), Division of Advancement and External Relations, and the Tarleton Alumni Association will host the ceremony in Heritage Oaks Park, near the intersection of Tarleton and McIlhaney streets. The public is invited to attend as the university family remembers its deceased alumni, faculty, staff and friends who have passed away during the past year.

In the past, Silver Taps was held during Tarleton’s Homecoming week. Now, the ceremony takes place in the spring, during Founder’s Week. Family and friends of the deceased are invited to attend the ceremony and observe as volunteers, primarily Tarleton students, carry a candle to represent the individuals who have passed away. This spring, Silver Taps will honor approximately 200 individuals.

Once all of the names are called, a wreath will be placed at the Tarleton Military Memorial. The ceremony will culminate with the placing of flowers at the base of the Memorial, the playing of Taps and a 21-gun salute.

Interested volunteers who would like to participate in the ceremony by holding a candle in memory of a member of the Tarleton family may sign up online at:
