Gordon Center program to focus on cheesemaking

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—The art of cheesemaking will be the subject of a free program at the W. K. Gordon Center for the Industrial History of Texas on March 3 at 2:30 p.m.

A representative of the Veldhuizen Texas Farmstead Cheese Company, located between Stephenville and Dublin, will be on hand to discuss techniques and share stories of handcrafted artisan cheese production.

Since 2000, the Veldhuizen family-owned company has been producing a wide variety of all natural cheeses on their own farmstead. The company started small with 20 calves, which they raised to milking age, and one variety of cheese. They now use the raw milk from their own dairy cows to produce 15 varieties of natural cheese. They take pride in the fact that no preservatives are used in their products.

After the program, visitors will be able to sample a few of the Veldhuizen’s best cheeses.

The W.K. Gordon Center is a museum and research facility of Tarleton State University located at exit 367 on Interstate 20 midway between Fort Worth and Abilene. Motorists from the west should leave I-20 at exit 363 to avoid construction delays. Regular hours for the center are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays, closed on Mondays.
