Dairy producers, public invited to Southwest Dairy Day

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton and Texas AgriLife Extension Service will host the 2012 Southwest Dairy Day on Thursday, Oct. 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Area dairy producers and the general public are invited to the event at the Southwest Regional Dairy Center.

The event will include booth vendors, equipment dealers, educational activities and tours of the Dairy Center allowing visitors to get an up-close look at the automatic sort gates, 24-cow carousel milking parlor with radio frequency identification capabilities, classrooms and research laboratories, free-stall barn and other production facilities.

Dairy producers will also be given the opportunity to earn DOPA credits during two educational seminars being offered: “An Emerging Technology to Improve Air Quality for Dairies,” presented by AgriLife Extension’s Dr. Saqib Mukhtar, and “Texas Dairy Industry Update,” presented by Darren Turley, executive director of the Texas Association of Dairymen at 10 a.m., and “Various Environmental Issues Affecting Dairy Producers” presented by Jim Bradbury and “TMR Audits: Ways to Improve Your Feeding Strategies,” presented by Dr. Jeff Mikkus at 1:30 p.m.

At noon, state Rep. Sid Miller and state Sen. Craig Estes will offer remarks to those in attendance before visitors are invited to enjoy a free lunch sponsored by Hi-Pro.
