STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton State University graduate student Shayla Priddy of Stephenville has been awarded one of seven $7,500 graduate scholarships from Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society.

Priddy graduated magna cum laude in May 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a minor in secondary education. She had a 3.83 grade point average.

Priddy will soon begin graduate studies in mathematics at Tarleton. Upon obtaining her master’s degree, Priddy said her goal is to then pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics and ultimately teach math educator preparation courses at the college level.

During her years at Tarleton, Priddy was involved in several organizations, including Tarleton Educators for the Advancement of Mathematics and the Cubic Academy, which focuses on professional development and technical training. She is also currently serving a two-year term as a student delegate to the executive board of Phi Eta Sigma. As an undergrad, Priddy served as vice president and president of the local chapter and currently serves as the chapter’s senior adviser. In October, Priddy will present a leadership workshop at the Phi Eta Sigma national convention in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Phi Eta Sigma Endowed Scholarships have been established to honor the founders and distinguished members of the society. Priddy’s scholarships will be used for full-time graduate study during the 2012-2013 school year.

Phi Eta Sigma is an honor society that encourages excellence in academics and community service among first-year students. Recently, more than 80 Tarleton students were inducted into the university’s chapter of Phi Eta Sigma.

To qualify for Phi Eta Sigma membership, a student must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale in the first or second semester. The Tarleton chapter of Phi Eta Sigma is actively engaged in numerous projects and activities promoting academic excellence and campus community service.
