STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton State University Bass Club anglers Colt Farris and Kehl Robbins led the pack and gave Texas the winning edge in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series’ Louisiana-Texas Shootout, held June 10 at Red River Pool 3 near Natchitoches, La.

Farris, a senior political science major from Crowley, and Robbins, a junior manufacturing engineering technology major from Stephenville, met their limit of five bass for a total of 11 pounds, 4 ounces, resulting in the heaviest bag at the scales for the 10 collegiate teams representing Texas. The duo said they caught their bass by flipping a craw worm in one to two feet of water on shallow brush.

“They were eating it real good, and we caught about 40 bass,” Farris said after the tournament. “Beating Louisiana on their home turf is the best thing you can do. We went on the road and won. Half of the tournament is the rivalry, but it’s just wanting to win. We kept trying to win, and we did it.”

The Lone Star State, represented by teams from Dallas Baptist, Lamar University, North Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, University of Texas-Tyler, Stephen F. Austin and Tarleton, combined forces to bring in 61 pounds, 2 ounces, and claim a win over Louisiana’s universities, which brought in 49 pounds during the tournament. The exhibition match weigh-in was held on stage with the concurrent Bassmaster Elite Series’ Toledo Bend Battle.

Tarleton’s Bass Club, which sends anglers to multiple tournaments throughout the year, is currently ranked 11th in the nation by the Association of Collegiate Anglers’ School of the Year standings. So far, Tarleton has amassed 536 points after competing in several ACA-sanctioned tournaments dating back to July 2011.

Formed in 2007, the Tarleton Bass Club has more than 30 student members who regularly fish in six or more tournaments each year. For more information about the Bass Club at Tarleton, visit www.tarletonbassclub.com.
