STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Gov. Rick Perry has appointed Tarleton student Colton Buckley to The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents as the student regent. Buckley will serve a one-year term on the board beginning June 1.

“I’m honored and humbled to be able to serve the people of Texas, the students and others in the A&M System, and the taxpayers of Texas,” said Buckley, a sophomore political science major from Gatesville.

“Tarleton State University is excited to have our first Texas A&M University System student regent,” said Dr. F. Dominic Dottavio, Tarleton’s president. “This experience provides a rare glimpse into the System few students have the opportunity to see. We congratulate Mr. Buckley and wish him the very best during his year of service.”

Buckley noted that he was “the first regent ever from Tarleton State, the last regent appointed by an Aggie governor, and the youngest appointee ever by the longest-serving governor in Texas.”

According to The Texas A&M University System, a student regent is not a member of the board of regents of the system. A student regent has the same powers and duties as the members of the board of regents, including the right to attend and participate in meetings, except that the student regent may not vote on any matter before the board or make or second any motion before the board, and is not counted in determining whether a quorum exists or in determining the outcome of any vote.
