Kinesiology professor recognized by athletic trainers' association

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Dr. Steve Simpson, professor of kinesiology and director of sports medicine at Tarleton, was recently named the recipient of the Frank Medina Award by the Southwest Athletic Trainers’ Association.

The award is given annually to an athletic trainer who has made significant contributions throughout his career to the athletic training profession. Simpson will be formally honored in July during the SWATA annual meeting in Frisco, Texas.

Simpson joined the Tarleton faculty in 1984 and currently heads the university’s athletic training department. During his tenure, Simpson has received numerous awards and recognition, most recently being named the Lone Star Conference’s Athletic Training Staff of the Year. He’s also received prior accolades from SWATA and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and was recognized with a 25-year award and the “Most Distinguished Athletic Training Award” in 2013.

Simpson holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in health and physical education from Hardin-Simmons University and Texas A&M University–Commerce, respectively, and obtained his doctorate in education from A&M-Commerce.
