STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton State University has officially announced the completion of the brand new tennis courts at the Potisham-Lard Tennis Complex with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday afternoon.

“This tennis project has been a priority for us for some time now to show our commitment to continue to improve our competitive level of play,” said Tarleton Athletic Director Lonn Reisman. “We’re committed to working hard at improving our women’s programs and I’m thankful for Dr. (F. Dominic) Dottavio’s support on this, as well as everyone else who as involved.”

The project included renovations to the four existing tennis courts, the addition of four brand new courts on the backside of the original courts and new lighting for the entire complex.

“I’m certainly glad to finally have these new courts,” said fourteenth-year head coach Lance Drake. “The administration was great throughout this process. It’s been a long time coming and I’m thankful for the hard work of President Dottavio, Coach Reisman as well as everyone else involved.”

Over 100 supporters of Tarleton athletics as well as members of the Stephenville Chamber of Commerce, university administration, athletics staff, the Tarleton cheer and dance teams and the 2014 TexAnn tennis team were on hand April 2, as Dr. Dottavio cut the ribbon and unveiled the brand new addition.

The original tennis complex was opened on Nov. 3, 1979 after being constructed under a grant from the Mary Potishman Lard Trust. Leo Potishman and Clyde H. Wells, a chairman of the Texas A&M University System’s board of regents, volleyed a gold tennis ball that Saturday to christen the courts. The speakers also unveiled a plaque dedicated to the memory of Robert S. Lard.

The original four courts, funded by the Lard Trust Grant, was constructed for a total cost of $115,000.

Tarleton will play its first match on the courts April 8 at 2 p.m. in a Lone Star Conference match against Midwestern State.
