Friday, March 28, 2014

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton State University’s senior Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) will host its 13th annual Junior ROTC (JROTC) Texan Battalion Drill Meet for area high schools on Saturday, March 29, on the Tarleton campus.

Cadets from JROTC units at 16 high schools across Texas will compete in various events from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with most events slated to take place on the Tarleton campus, with an additional event scheduled at Hunewell Ranch.

The drill meet is open and free to the public, and includes an awards ceremony at approximately 5:15 p.m. at Tarleton’s Memorial Stadium. Concessions will be available throughout the day.

Designed to encourage JROTC cadets to build teams to compete and develop sportsmanship, camaraderie and esprit de corps, the Texan Battalion Drill Meet also serves as an introduction to college options and the benefits of senior ROTC to cadets who plan on continued education after high school, said Master Sgt. Ron Corella.

Judges for the contest will be the upper class cadets from Tarleton’s Texan Battalion. Events at this year’s drill meet and their locations include: unarmed drill and armed drill at parking lot P-20 West, color guard at the Recreation Sports Center, and physical fitness set to take place at Memorial Stadium. In addition, the meet will include a separate contest known as orienteering, or land navigation, at the university’s Hunewell Ranch.

Among the high schools represented this weekend are: Moises E. Molina High School, San Angelo Central High School, Townview High School, North Dallas JROTC, Bryan Adams High School, Caprock High School, C.E. Ellison High School, Copperas Cove High School, Legacy High School, S.H. Rider High School, Wichita Falls High School, North Mesquite High School, Belton High School, Granbury High School and La Porte High School.
