Dinner in the Stacks to feature author of the Bankhead Highway in Texas

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thursday, March 20, 2014

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Author Dr. Dan L. Smith will discuss his new book, The Bankhead Highway in Texas: Texas Highway No. 1, at the Friends of the Dick Smith Library’s upcoming Dinner in the Stacks event, Saturday, April 5.

The semi-annual event features food, door prizes and book discussion among thousands of volumes inside Tarleton’s library. Dinner in the Stacks opens with appetizers at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 and a program led by Smith.

The Bankhead Highway was the first all-weather transcontinental highway in America, running from Washington D.C., to San Diego. About a third of its length was in Texas. Much of the old highway is still visible and passable. Designated as Texas Highway 1 by the nascent Texas Highway Department, much of the route from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex west through Weatherford, Millsap and Mineral Wells was later used as the new U.S. Highway 80.

Smith’s book explores the expanding automobile market in America, the post road system in America and the appearance of both national and state level transportation departments. The concept of roads that “go somewhere” was a change from the system of existing county and farm-to-market roads focused on connecting points in rural locales.

“One-hundred percent of the proceeds from Dinner in the Stacks is put toward funding Dick Smith Library projects which help provide additional resources to improve Tarleton students’ library experience,” said Friends of the Library’s board president Bill Dennis. “We welcome individuals and businesses to join our organization and become true friends in our mission to support the Dick Smith Library.”

Reservations should be made no later than 5 p.m., Wednesday, April 2. Tickets are $17.50 for members of Friends of the Library and $20 for nonmembers.
