STEPHENVILLE, Texas—For the fifth consecutive season both the Tarleton State Texan and TexAnn basketball teams have been invited to compete in the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament.

The No. 5 nationally-ranked Texans earned the No. 2 seed in the South Central region bracket, announced Sunday evening.

The Texans (27-2 overall) earned the Lone Star Conference’s automatic bid into the national tournament after defeating Midwestern State 71-65 in the LSC tournament final Saturday night at Allen Event Center in Allen, Texas. Tarleton will face No. 7-seeded Texas A&M International (22-8), who earned the right to get into the tournament by winning the Heartland Conference’s automatic bid on Saturday.

Metro State (28-1) earned the No. 1 seed and right to host the regional championship in Denver for a second straight year after winning the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament. The Roadrunners will face No. 8-seeded Colorado-Colorado Springs (21-8) in first round action.

The South Central Regional is set to begin this Saturday, March 15, with first round action, while the semifinals will be held on Sunday, March 16. The regional final is scheduled for Tuesday, March 18.

For the sixth time in school history, the TexAnns will compete in the field of 64 teams playing for a NCAA national championship.

“I feel like we’re playing our best basketball right now,” said Tarleton head coach Ronnie Hearne, who has led Tarleton to all six of the NCAA Tournament berths over his 11-year Tarleton career. “We’re starting to peak at the right time and that gives us excitement heading into the tournament.

“I told our players not to look at this as a regional tournament, but as the national tournament, and that’s pretty special,” he continued. “If we go into this tournament as prepared and focused as we were last week, I think we'll be all right.”

Tarleton’s women earned the No. 3 seed and is scheduled to play No. 6 Texas A&M International in the opening round game Friday, March 14, at the First United Bank Center in Canyon, Texas. The game time is still to be determined.

LSC rival West Texas A&M earned the right to host the tournament by being named the No. 1 seed in the region and finishing ahead of last year’s top seed, Colorado Mesa.

The women’s regional tournament will take place in Canyon from Friday through Monday with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight at Gannon University in Erie, Pa.

More tournament information, including game times, will be revealed on Monday or Tuesday, following a conference call between all schools in Elite Eight.
