STEPHENVILLE, Texas—David Valdez, former White House photographer and personal photographer to President George H.W. Bush, will speak at Tarleton on Monday, Nov. 18, at a campus-wide noon event and then separately to several classes.

The event at noon will be held in Room 116 of the O.A. Grant Humanities Building and last until 12:55 p.m. Valdez will speak about his experiences as White House photographer and his other work as a photojournalist.

He also will speak to media writing and photojournalism classes in the afternoon.

“We are so pleased to have a photojournalist of Valdez’s caliber on campus to visit with our students,” said Kathryn Jones Malone, who teaches media writing and photojournalism. “One of the best ways our students learn is to interact with working journalists and hear how they do their jobs. We hope they will get inspired and aim high in their careers.”

Valdez trained as a photographer in the U.S. Air Force. He later earned a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from the University of Maryland at College Park. While attending college, he was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He left the federal government to become chief photographer for the United States Chamber of Commerce.

In 1983, Valdez became personal photographer to then-Vice President George Bush. In 1988, when Bush was elected president of the United States, he appointed Valdez to the position of director of the White House Photo Office.

After traveling to 75 countries and all 50 states with President Bush, Valdez left the White House in January 1993. Since then he has worked for several private and governmental groups. Many of his photographs have been published in national and international publications as Life, Newsweek, Time, U.S. News and World Report, Forbes, Paris Match and People.
