Men's rodeo team wins title at Frank Phillips College

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—The Tarleton State Rodeo Team traveled to Frank Phillips College for their third rodeo of the 2013-14 season and returned with the men’s team title while the women finished in the top five. Tarleton also captured the men’s and women’s All-Around titles, along with first place finishes in bareback riding, goat tying, barrel racing, team roping and saddle bronc riding.
Richie Champion continued his streak in the bareback riding. Winning the long round with an 81 and the short round with a score of 69, he collected a total of 180 points for the team.
Saddle bronc riders Travis Nelson and Colton Miller made it back to the short round with rides of 66 and 62 respectively. Nelson won the short round with a 74-point ride putting him first in the average and earning 145 points. Nelson is currently second in the Southwest Region, with Miller in fifth.
Billy Bob Brown and Garrett Rose made it back to the short round in the calf roping. Brown placed second in the long round with a 10.1-second effort while Rose was fourth with a time of 10.4. Brown is splitting sixth after three rodeos.
In the steer wrestling, Jace Melvin returned to the short round where he was 5.7 and split second placing him fourth in the average. Fellow team member Sam Williams is third in the region and Melvin fourth.
College National Finals Rodeo national champions Billy Bob Brown and partner Logan Medlin of Eastern New Mexico University won the long round of the team roping with a 6.7 and the short round with a 6.5 giving them first in the average to collect 180 points. Colton Hererra and partner Forrest Fisher of Weatherford College split third in the long round with a 7.2 and split fourth in the short round with an 8.5. This big win for Brown moved him into second place in the region standings.
Emily Efurd won the long round in the barrel racing with a time of 17.48 and placed third in the short round with a 17.38, and first in the average for the weekend. Lindsey Trammell and Brenna Donnelly also made it back to the short round with times of 17.72 and 17.87. Trammell placed fifth in the long round with a 17.52 giving her fourth in the average. Efurd’s win moved her into third place, with Jaimie Barrow in the fifth spot.
In the breakaway, Katey Jo Anthony won the long round with a time of 2.8 and Kortni McConnell placed fourth with a 3.2. Ashley Roberts roped both of her calves in 3.7 placing her third in the short round and the average.
Baili Collins and Anthony split fifth in the long round of the goat tying with an 8.0. Collins placed third in the short round with an 8.3 and third in the average. McKenna Wagner won the long and short rounds with times of 7.3 and 7.1 giving her first in the average. Wagner moved into second in the region standings, while Collins is right behind her in third.
The team traveled to Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Oct. 17-19, and will compete at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas the last weekend of October to finish out the fall rodeo semester.
The team will also be hosting several big events the first and second weekend in November. The first weekend will be the fourth annual steak dinner, auction, and Tarleton Rodeo Hall of Fame Induction ceremony, held in the Barry B. Thompson Student Center Ballrooms on the Stephenville campus.

The second weekend in November Tarleton Rodeo will host the Jordan Freeman Memorial Roping at Lone Star Arena in Stephenville. Calf roping and breakway roping will take place on Saturday and team roping on Sunday.
