STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton students and faculty members presented papers at the Social Media Technology Conference and Workshop 2013, a national conference hosted by Bowie State University and Howard University on Sept. 26-27 in Bowie, Md.

The presentations included:

—The Do’s and Don’ts of Live-Blogging with Undergraduate Reporters, by junior Madison Campbell, Dr. Sarah Maben, assistant professor of communication studies, and Dan Malone, assistant professor;

—Google for Collaborative Reporting: A Case Study of Collaborative Reporting Projects in Undergraduate Journalism Courses, by Maben, Malone and student Rachel Peoples;

—Triple or Nothing: Taking Your Department’s Twitter Account to the Next Level, by Yvonne Mulhern, a Tarleton instruction/reference librarian.

Campbell, a communication studies major from Fort Worth, landed the opportunity by presenting her research on “The Do’s and Don’ts of Live-Blogging with Undergraduate Reporters” for the Dean’s Circle in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts in the spring of 2013. Following that presentation, Maben urged her to apply for the conference and she was accepted.

Campbell, who received a student travel grant from the Office of Student Research and Creative Activities, said, “It’s a great opportunity. I just hope to do a good job representing Tarleton and the communication studies department.”

Peoples, also a communication studies major, will share what she has learned as the distributive reporting editor for Texan News Service. She is using Google’s Fusion Tables for a comprehensive mapping project, funded by an AEJMC-Knight Foundation grant.

Maben and Campbell attended the conference in person. Malone and Peoples presented via videoconference. Mulhern presented virtually on increasing a department’s Twitter presence and following.

The conference’s audience is comprised of communication scholars, professors and students from all over the globe. More about the conference is available at
