STEPHENVILLE, Texas—This week, Dr. Michael Landis, assistant professor of history in the Department of Social Sciences, took three students from his HIST 312 “Age of Jackson” course to the annual Battle of San Jacinto Symposium in Houston.

The April 13 event, hosted by the San Jacinto Battleground Conservancy and the Texas State Historical Association at the University of Houston Hilton Conference Center, was open to the public, and this year’s theme was “Wars, Treaties, and Boundaries – A Look at the Shape of Texas.” Scholars from the United States and Mexico presented their research on a variety of topics, including Mexican law, forensic anthropology and boundary disputes. The event also included book sales, re-enactors and a formal lunch.

Students Cody Colobrito, Jessica Hughes and Yovane Uribe were among those joining Landis in attending the symposium. “It was wonderful to spend one-on-one time with my students, and the road-trip was certainly enjoyable,” said Landis.

At the symposium, Landis introduced his students to historians Eric Walther from the University of Houston and Mark Stegmaier of Cameron University. In addition to learning from the papers delivered, Landis’ students got a sense of what professional history conferences are like and the excitement that can come from new research and new interpretations.

On the return trip, all agreed that Tarleton students should play a more active role in state and regional history events, such as the annual meeting of the Southern Historical Society.
