Tarleton offers buyouts to some faculty

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton is offering a voluntary separation program for tenured faculty members meeting specific eligibility requirements.
Program requirements, similar to those previously adopted by other System member universities, will be provided to those faculty members who may qualify. Adoption of the program comes after substantial work by Tarleton’s Human Resources Department and the System’s Office of General Counsel.
“Rationale for offering the program at this time is two-fold,” said Dr. Karen Murray, Tarleton’s provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. According to Murray, “first, the positions that are voluntarily vacated will be preserved but replaced with an entry level faculty. Those replaced positions may however, be redirected to different programs within the department or different departments within the college. Tarleton’s rapid growth has not been evenly distributed, so flexibility to redirect lines is very important to the University. Second, Tarleton needs the capacity to expand the number of faculty positions given our recent unprecedented growth. The instructional salary dollars saved from hiring an entry level faculty into a position vacated by a senior level faculty will be pooled across all positions and used to create new faculty lines.”
Eligible faculty who decide to participate must sign and submit a Voluntary Separation Agreement to their respective dean by 5 p.m. on May 15, 2013.
The program will pay 100 percent of an eligible faculty member’s annual budgeted salary in exchange for a voluntary separation of employment effective no later than Aug. 31, 2013. As an alternative, the program will pay 50 percent of an eligible faculty member’s annual budgeted salary in exchange for a voluntary separation of employment effective no later than Aug. 31, 2014.
Excluded from program participation are faculty who: 1) have previously provided written notice of their retirement that has been accepted by the university; 2) who hold an administrative appointment, have administrative duties in excess of a 9-month appointment, or receive a stipend for performing administrative duties; 3) whose salary is more than 50 percent grant-funded; or 4) serve in the College of Business Administration.
Participants may be rehired in a non-tenured or non-tenure track position, but reemployment is not guaranteed.
