STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences will welcome teams from across the country this week as part of the 2nd annual National FFA Invitational, a series of warm-up events for national judging contest qualifiers.

The contests will be held on campus Thursday, Sept. 28 with an awards assembly slated for the following day. Contests at the National FFA Invitational include: entomology, floriculture, poultry, milk quality and products, environmental and natural resources, wildlife and recreational management, and veterinary science.

All of the teams participating in this week’s contests have qualified by being in the top 10 percent of their respective events at their state contests. The National FFA Invitational is designed to serve as a practice round before the national contest, which coincides with the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.

In addition to the judging contests, Tarleton will host a Proficiency Award Finalist seminar for all eight Texas finalists. This event will be designed to enhance the finalists’ chance of being selected as the national proficiency winner in their respective divisions.

“This contest gives our students the opportunity to learn first-hand how to set up, manage and score Career Development Events which many will be involved in as teachers and 4-H agents upon graduation,” said Dr. Ted Ford, organizer of the FFA contests hosted by Tarleton. “These events also expose Tarleton to students from other states, some of whom may make Tarleton their collegiate home in the near future.”

Approximately 100 agricultural students at Tarleton will assist with the contests, along with faculty and staff from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and representatives from the Texas Institute of Applied Environmental Research (TIAER).
