Tarleton State University

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton’s Academic Support Programs, which provide a variety of services to help students be successful in their coursework, recently received recertification from the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA).

Following a review of Tarleton’s application to CRLA, the university’s peer tutoring training program was recertified for all three levels through August 2016, including an international certification.

Kayla Wood, director of Academic Support Programs (ASP) at Tarleton, says the CRLA recertification helps ensure quality training for its student tutors, which in turn aids students who benefit from peer tutoring, supplemental instruction and GRE preparation workshops.

“This is a great achievement for Academic Support Programs to receive an international certification,” said Wood. “We strive to maintain quality training and supervision of tutors and tracking tutoring experience for each tutor.”

Tutors who successfully complete CRLA tutor certification requirements will not only be better equipped to help others study more successfully, but they will also have an internationally recognized certification to put on their résumés, explained Wood.

Academic Support Programs received its first certification in 2001 and was recertified in 2006, said Wood. “This time the recertification process was much more rigorous with many more requirements that had to be met in order to recertify our peer tutoring program,” added Wood.

The primary mission of ASP is to assist students in developing effective learning techniques. ASP is committed to fulfilling its mission by helping students attain their highest level of academic achievement possible by creating a supportive and challenging environment.
