The main event will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, with a reception for the community starting at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event invites students, faculty and community members to engage in meaningful dialogue to honor Indigenous histories, explore their ongoing legacies and examine the importance of Native voices in today\u2019s narratives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symposium will feature a distinguished panel of Native scholars and cultural leaders, including Chief Edward Chretien and Dr. Jeffery Darensbourg of the Atakapa-Ishak tribe. Joining them will be Dr. Dale Weeks, author of \u201cCherokee Civil Warrior: Chief John Ross and the Struggle for Tribal Sovereignty,\u201d and Tarleton State Associate Professor of History Dr. Steven Peach. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Lynn Burlbaw, professor emeritus at Texas A&amp;M University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organized by Assistant Professor of Curriculum &amp; Instruction Dr. Eliel Hinojosa Jr., the symposium is funded through a Tarleton State President\u2019s Excellence in Research Scholars award supporting public humanities and cultural engagement initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis event reflects Tarleton State\u2019s growing role as a regional leader in public humanities,\u201d said Dr. Hinojosa. \u201cBy amplifying Native voices, we hope to deepen understanding of shared histories and recognize those whose stories are still among us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cStill Among Us Symposium\u201d seeks to foster public engagement, promote community dialogue and deepen the university\u2019s role as a regional leader in lifelong learning and historical inquiry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attendees will gain insight into the ongoing legacies of Indigenous peoples explore the importance of varied perspectives in education and public memory and engage in dialogue that bridges past and present.
