{"id":881,"date":"2022-07-18T15:11:44","date_gmt":"2022-07-18T15:11:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.tarleton.edu\/registrar\/?page_id=881"},"modified":"2026-09-03T16:21:54","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T16:21:54","slug":"three-peat","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/registrar\/timely-graduation\/three-peat\/","title":{"rendered":"Third Attempt Rule"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Third Attempt Rule<\/strong> was passed by the State of Texas to discourage students from repeating courses. Texas residents attempting the same course for a third time since Fall 2002 will be charged an additional $100 per credit hour for that course. This provision is described in the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Rules (<a href=\"https:\/\/texreg.sos.state.tx.us\/public\/readtac$ext.TacPage?sl=R&amp;app=9&amp;p_dir=&amp;p_rloc=&amp;p_tloc=&amp;p_ploc=&amp;pg=1&amp;p_tac=&amp;ti=19&amp;pt=1&amp;ch=13&amp;rl=108\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chapter 13, Subchapter F, \u00a713.108<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you enroll in a course and decide to drop the course, any hours that were attempted will count toward the limit imposed by the <strong>Third Attempt Rule<\/strong>. If you drop the course prior to the official reporting date, the hours will not be counted against the limit imposed by the <strong>Third Attempt Rule<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attempted hours are calculated for courses in which a student is enrolled on official reporting day, which is approximately two weeks after the beginning of fall and spring semesters and one week after the beginning of summer semesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Semester credit hours or contact hours attempted by students for the following types of coursework are exempt from the <strong>Third Attempt Rule<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Thesis and dissertation courses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Independent study courses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Special topics and seminar courses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Continuing Education courses that must be repeated to retain professional certification<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developmental Education coursework taken three or more times will be allowed; however, developmental coursework in excess of 18 hours is subject to additional charges<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Courses that may be repeated for credit because they involve different or more advanced course content each time they are taken, including but not limited to: individual music lessons, Workforce Education Course Manual Special Topics courses (when the topic changes), theater practicum, music performance, ensembles, certain physical education and Kinesiology courses, and studio art are also exempt from the <strong>Third Attempt Rule<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Appeals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any student who is being charged additional tuition rates for violating the <strong>Third Attempt Rule<\/strong> is eligible to file an appeal. Students who are not currently being charged additional tuition rates do not need to file an appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are unsure if you are currently in violation of either the Undergraduate Funding Limit Rule and\/or the <strong>Third Attempt Rule<\/strong> you can email the\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:Registrar_Exceptions@tarleton.edu\">Office of the Registrar<\/a>\u00a0or call us at\u00a0<a href=\"tel:+12549689417\">254-968-9417<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Appeal process only covers a current semester of enrollment. Students must file an appeal for every semester that they are affected by the 3-Peal Rule. Any Appeal Board decision will be made for a current semester and does not carry over to future semesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-advgb-accordions advgb-accordions-511a6bc6-1833-4487-9fe6-46a5a770ca46 advgb-accordion-wrapper\" data-collapsed=\"true\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-advgb-accordion-item advgb-accordion-item\" style=\"margin-bottom:15px\"><div class=\"advgb-accordion-header\" style=\"background-color:#ffffff;color:#4f2d7f;border-style:solid;border-width:1px;border-radius:2px\"><span class=\"advgb-accordion-header-icon accordion-state\"><svg class=\"advgb-icon-closed\" fill=\"#4f2d7f\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path fill=\"none\" d=\"M0,0h24v24H0V0z\"><\/path><path d=\"M19,13h-6v6h-2v-6H5v-2h6V5h2v6h6V13z\"><\/path><\/svg><svg class=\"advgb-icon-opened\" fill=\"#4f2d7f\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"24\" height=\"24\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\"><path fill=\"none\" d=\"M0,0h24v24H0V0z\"><\/path><path d=\"M19,13H5v-2h14V13z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/span><h3 class=\"advgb-accordion-header-title\" style=\"color:inherit\">Filing an Undergraduate <strong>Third Attempt Rule<\/strong> Appeal<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"advgb-accordion-body\" style=\"border-style:solid !important;border-width:1px !important;border-color:undefined !important;border-top:none !important;border-radius:2px !important\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All students who wish to file an appeal must complete an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tarleton.kualihub.com\/app\/67e45d5b78a303027e3b7cb6\/page\/67e45d5b78a303027e3b7cb6\/run\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Appeal Form<\/a>. Students must submit all tuition payments on time including any additional fees, regardless of submitting an Appeal Form, or they will be dropped for non-payment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students must complete the Appeal Form in its entirety. To be considered at the next Appeal Board meeting, the completed form must be submitted at least one week before tuition and fee payment deadlines for the semester in question. Holding the decision meetings before census deadlines allows students to drop the course with no attempted record on their transcript and receive a full refund if schedule changes need to be made before the semester begins.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Third Attempt Rule was passed by the State of Texas to discourage students from repeating courses.
