Board of Regents Meeting Update

I am pleased to report some exciting developments from the Board of Regents meeting today, including the status of our capital plan.

Tarleton submitted a five year Capital Plan for FY 2016 – 2020, which the A&M System used along with plans from the other members of the A&M System to develop a single comprehensive plan totaling $3.6 billion.  The Regents approved that plan today, and for our part, it includes several key projects:

  • $25 million for utility and infrastructure improvements, which is in the design phase and scheduled for FY 2016;
  • $54 million for the Applied Sciences I building on the Stephenville campus, which is in programming and planning phase, with the hope that the project will begin in FY 2016;
  • $39.6 million for the initial academic building for our planned Fort Worth campus, which also is in programming and planning, with the expectation that the project will begin in FY 2017, and
  • $24 million for the planned renovation and expansion of Memorial Stadium, which is scheduled to begin next year.

Altogether, the $162.7 million in capital projects for Tarleton is among the highest in the A&M System.

The Board authorized amending the lease of office and classroom space at the Hickman Building in Fort Worth.  Our continuing rapid growth in Fort Worth, which has increased more than 80% in the last five years, has resulted in an expansion to over 37,000 square feet of leased space.  This space is expected to meet our needs through August 31, 2019, when we anticipate the opening of our new campus on the Chisholm Trail Parkway.

The Board also took a number of other actions affecting Tarleton:

  • Granted the title of Professor Emerita of Psychology and Counseling to Dr. Linda Duncan, with 27 years of service to Tarleton.
  • Approved three resolutions honoring our national champions:  Ms. Euphemia Edem (long jump) and the Men’s 4x400m Relay Team in Track and Field, and the Men’s Rodeo Team.
  • Approved new admission standards that will take effect in fall 2016 for students wishing to attend Tarleton and raising the Application fee from $30 to $40.
  • Added Memorial Day to the holidays that must be observed throughout the system.  It joins Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The aforementioned actions by the Board of Regents position us well to continue our quest to become the premier student-focused university in Texas and beyond.
