The band had 97 members when Dr. Westbrook joined Tarleton State in 2009 and grew to a then-record 161 members in 2012.

This year’s band also features the largest color guard and drumline in university history. More than 110 students are new to the program.

“When I was hired in 2009, the overwhelming desire from everyone was for the marching band to grow,” said Dr. Westbrook. “I consider it a blessing that the university, Dr. Hurley, and our campus and community appreciate the value of the marching band and athletic bands in general. Those elements have contributed greatly to the growth of The Sound & The Fury.”

University support, increased visibility and expanded recruiting opportunities have helped fuel the program’s growth. This summer, The Sound & The Fury performed during new-student orientation sessions for the first time, giving incoming students an early look at the band experience. Dr. Westbrook said several students decided to join after seeing the group perform.

Band Day provides another major recruiting opportunity, bringing hundreds of middle school and high school musicians to campus to rehearse, participate in game-day activities and perform alongside Tarleton State students.

Dr. Westbrook also credits current members with helping attract future Texans by sharing the traditions, friendships and sense of belonging that define the program.

“My first thought when I heard that The Sound & The Fury now had 200 members was ‘Wow, that is so much bigger than my high school band,’” exclaimed Lourdes Quijas, a second-year member. “Getting to know all of these people and calling them family; this band is so welcoming, so humble and supportive. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

The Sound & The Fury is open to students from all academic majors. Scholarships are available through an audition process.

“It has always been our honor to serve Tarleton State University and the greater surrounding community,” added Dr. Westbrook. “The Sound & The Fury looks forward to continuing to serve and is thankful for all current and future resources and support.
