STEPHENVILLE, Texas \u2014 Tarleton State University will host a pair of day-long events in June relating to Texas history and featuring nationally recognized historians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Texas Industrial Symposium: Texas Wines, Spirits and Breweries begins Friday, June 13, followed by the Texas New Deal Symposium Saturday, June 14. Both will be held in Room 113 of the Joe W. Autry Agriculture Building on the Stephenville campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Texas Industrial Symposium begins with three 9:15 a.m. sessions. Dr. Joseph Locke from the University of North Texas presents \u201cProhibition in Texas: The Rise and Fall of the Drys and Wets\u201d; Dr. Eric Morrow of Tarleton State presents \u201cReligious Conservatism and Advocacy in Texas\u201d; and Texas State University\u2019s Dr. Jason Mellard shares \u201cFrom \u2018Six Pack to Go\u201d to \u2018Una Mas Cerveza\u2019: Signifying Beer in Texas Country Music.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sessions starting at 11 a.m. feature \u201cMyths of Texas Drovers, Cowboys and Drink\u201d by Western Heritage Award winner Michael Grauer; Temple College\u2019s Gene Rhea Tucker\u2019s \u201cAlcohol in a Company Town\u201d; and \u201cYou Do the Crime, You Do the Time: Erath County Jail Logs, 1877-1910\u201d presented by Tarleton State\u2019s Dr. Deborah Liles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Afternoon offerings include \u201cDistilleries in Texas\u201d at 1:45 p.m. and \u201cBeer, Wine and Cider in Texas\u201d at 2:30 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Texas New Deal Symposium covers the historic New Deal series of programs implemented by President Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1933 to 1939 and their effects on Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Texas Tech\u2019s Dr. William Scott, Dr. Ron Goodwin of Prairie View A&M and Tarleton State\u2019s Dr. Jahue E. Anderson open the morning sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 9 a.m. presentations include Dr. Scott\u2019s discussion of \u201cFolk History\u2019s Lens on Slave Health from the Slave Narratives of Texas\u201d; Dr. Goodwin\u2019s \u201cPreserving the \u2018Amicable Relations between White and Negro Races\u2019\u201d; and Dr. Anderson\u2019s \u201cFrom Oil Boom to Water Crises: Wichita Falls and the New Deal Responses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Session II begins at 10:30 a.m. with \u201cThe Afterlife of Hatton Sumner\u2019s: In Retirement and Posthumously\u201d from Edward Sebesta; \u201cParanoia, Infiltration and Espionage: The Hunt for Nazis in 1930s and 1940s Texas\u201d by Dr. Michael Phillips; and Dr. M. Scott Sosebee\u2019s \u201cThe Triumph of Neoliberalism and the End of the New Deal Political Coalition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At 1:30 p.m., featured speaker Juliett George will present \u201cCarrying Away the Stones: When Bureaucracy Disrespected a Civil Works Administration Wall and its Embedded Human History.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
