{"id":48331,"date":"2023-03-10T15:58:09","date_gmt":"2023-03-10T21:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/news\/?p=48331"},"modified":"2023-03-13T21:19:39","modified_gmt":"2023-03-14T02:19:39","slug":"tarleton-student-researchers-shine-at-annual-pathways-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/news\/tarleton-student-researchers-shine-at-annual-pathways-symposium\/","title":{"rendered":"Tarleton Student Researchers Shine at Annual Pathways Symposium"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>STEPHENVILLE, Texas \u2014&nbsp;A pair of Tarleton State University doctoral students took first and second place in the Texas A&amp;M University System Pathways Student Research Symposium, March 4 and 5.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marissa Hayes and John Galloway were among 15 winners from Tarleton at the annual system research showcase, hosted this year by Texas A&amp;M-Galveston. Forty-four students qualified to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy hearty congratulations to all of our TAMUS Pathways winners for their remarkable achievements,\u201d said Dr. Rupa Iyer, Vice President for Research, Innovation and Economic Development. \u201cWe are so proud of their hard work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hayes, in her second year of doctoral study, took first place with her presentation, \u201cInvisible Damage: An Analysis of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Crime Victimization of Women, Race, and Ethnicity.\u201d&nbsp;Galloway, a first-year student, earned second place in the Social Science competition with \u201cCrisis Intervention Teams: Exploring Their Relationship to Call Reduction and Time on Call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symposium is open to undergraduate and graduate students from all 11 TAMUS institutions. The students present their research to, and network with, faculty members, judges and other students across the system. Separate categories feature undergraduate, master\u2019s and doctorate posters, or oral presentations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur students did a fantastic job presenting their research,\u201d said Adelaide Caudle, Communications Manager in the College of Graduate Studies. \u201cThey worked hard with their faculty members, and it certainly paid off. Fifteen of the Tarleton students were named winners at the annual competition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Master\u2019s winners in the Agriculture and Natural Resources competition were Katherine Hays, who was first with \u201cSoil Nutrient Correlations to Biochar, Manure, and Tillage Practices.\u201d Samantha McGovern\u2019s \u201cEffect of Dietary Hempseed Meal on Growth Performance and Dry Matter Intake in Yearling Rough-stock Bulls\u201d took second, and Ashley Mason presented the third-place \u201cEffects of Oral Supplementation of Cannabidiol on Young Stallion Behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTarleton State University was very well represented at the Pathways symposium,\u201d said Dr. Barry Lambert, Interim Dean for the College of Graduate Studies. \u201cThe quality and diversity of research presented by our students is a direct result of President Hurley\u2019s vision of providing broad access to faculty-led research experiences for our students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other winners at the master\u2019s level were Torie Henderson, first place in&nbsp;Business and Information Technology with \u201cCatch 22-Study 2\u201d; Ethan Welborn, second place in Engineering and Computer Science with \u201cDeep Neural Networks with Mask R-CNN for Detection, Tracking, and Speed Estimation of Vehicles\u201d; and Keelyn Breenan, second place in Social Science with \u201cOperator Preview Effects in Multiplication: Evidence of Absence or Absence of Evidence?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tarleton\u2019s undergraduate winners in Biomedical and Health Sciences were Bonnie Large, first with \u201cPerception and Likelihood of Phage Therapy Adoption Among Primary Care Providers: A Cross-sectional Study,\u201d and second-place Lindsay Rankin with \u201cA Bilateral Comparison of Overuse Shoulder Rotation in Overhead Throwing Athletes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tarleton undergrads also took the top two spots in Business&nbsp;and&nbsp;Information. Madison Reich was first with \u201cA Student Run Business Applying Experiential Learning Operates in College of Business,\u201d and Julia Fincher\u2019s \u201cMarketing of Cannabis Over the Years\u201d took second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other Tarleton undergraduates placing at the symposium were Isabella Zapata, whose presentation \u201cA Diffusion-Model Decomposition of the Unit Decade Compatibility Effect in Two-digit Number Comparison\u201d was first in Mathematics\u00a0andPhysical Science;
