{"id":47702,"date":"2022-12-06T08:00:32","date_gmt":"2022-12-06T14:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/news\/?p=47702"},"modified":"2022-12-06T13:19:28","modified_gmt":"2022-12-06T19:19:28","slug":"tarleton-experience-drives-commencement-speaker-as-graduation-nears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/news\/tarleton-experience-drives-commencement-speaker-as-graduation-nears\/","title":{"rendered":"Tarleton Experience Drives Commencement Speaker as Graduation Nears"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>STEPHENVILLE, Texas \u2014 Emily Verret\u2019s two-pronged commencement address will emphasize how Tarleton State University truly reflects its core values and how struggles can create a bond with fellow students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily\u2019s speech will highlight the 3 p.m. graduation ceremony Dec. 9 at Memorial Stadium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTarleton\u2019s core values of integrity, respect and excellence really came out in my time here. That tour was all it took to persuade her to become a Tarleton Texan majoring in animal science. She already was aware of Tarleton\u2019s standing among ag educators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a really good fit when I visited,\u201d she said. \u201cIt felt like home. It was a small town but a big-college feel at the same time. It was exactly what I was looking for. It really got the wheels turning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While planning a career, she had an opportunity to expand her educational horizons. She became involved in undergraduate research, working with the animal nutrition team and eventually leading her own study.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cl learned a lot from that experience. It made me recognize my passion for animal nutrition. Eventually, I want to become a nutrition consultant for beef cattle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a slightly altered career path, she sees graduation as bittersweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to be very sad to leave, but I\u2019m excited for the future. I\u2019ll miss the animal science department, a lot. I made some close friends and really got involved. We kind of became a family \u2014 my family five hours away from home.
