STEPHENVILLE, Texas \u2014 Tarleton State University English Professor Dr. Sam Dodson\u2019s poem After Her Mother Passed<\/em> has been chosen for inclusion in The Poetry Foundation\u2019s American Life in Poetry<\/em> series, published in newspapers and venues across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHere is an elegant flower of a poem \u2014 small, delicate in sentiment and yet so resonant in meaning,\u201d wrote Kwame Dawes, a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. \u201cSam Dodson, in a few short lines, observes the stoic strength of faith, the sadness of loss, and the rituals we perform to help us cope with the helplessness that comes with grief.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n After Her Mother Passed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Lutheran beautiful Eva<\/p>\n\n\n\n broke down for a<\/p>\n\n\n\n dear, dear moment<\/p>\n\n\n\n before she picked<\/p>\n\n\n\n that rake back up<\/p>\n\n\n\n and moved maple<\/p>\n\n\n\n leaves over grass<\/p>\n\n\n\n Growing up in a large Catholic family in Omaha, Neb., Dr. Dodson was educated in an all-boys Jesuit high school in the early \u201970s. He holds an MA from the University of Iowa and a PhD from the University of Nebraska.
