Team members Zach Montalvo, Justin Seeton, Stetson Overton and Dakota Ebare weighed in a total of 33.34 pounds to beat out third place Louisiana State University and 185 other teams in the tournament.

The four-man University of North Alabama team gained almost a 10-pound lead over Tarleton to net first place.

Fishing several baits, the Tarleton team focused mainly on rock structures on the second day of the event, finding success with moving baits such as crankbaits, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and rigs.

“We knew it was going to be tough coming into this event because of the complete opposite conditions in the tournament than in practice,” Seeton said. “Overall, it actually help us because we stuck to what we knew and fished reaction baits around the hot water core and the waterfall. I’m thankful that we were able to work together, and I can’t thank Dakota and Zach enough because they were the backbone of the Tarleton team for this event.”

Ebare said that by the end of the first day, the team caught a three pounder on a reaction bait in muddy water. “We knew if we could catch them in muddy water, they would for sure be in the clearer water of Piney Creek. The morning of the second day we started in Piney along the rocky banks, and we caught a five pounder almost instantly. We knew then that we were on to something.”

Ebare landed a 7.42-pound big bass on a watermelon red chatterbait not long after the team figured out its new pattern.

“We’re super excited about our teamwork throughout the event,” he said. “I’m sure this will bump us up in Cabela’s School of the Year rankings.”

For standings and additional information, visit www.collegiatebasschampionship.com.

Tarleton, a member of The Texas A&M University System, provides a student-focused, value-driven educational experience marked by academic innovation and exemplary service, and dedicated to transforming students into tomorrow’s professional leaders.
