STEPHENVILLE, Texas\u2014From poetry to fiction to photography to music, Tarleton State University\u2019s Langdon Review<\/em> Weekend\u2014always scheduled just after Labor Day in historic downtown Granbury\u2014beckons authors and artists from across Texas and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Started 13 years ago, the weekend begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, with a special session featuring four former Texas State Poet Laureates\u2014Jim Hoggard, Karla K. Morton, Alan Birkelbach, and Larry D. Thomas\u2014at the Dora Langdon Center Concert Hall, corner of East Bridge and Brazos streets. The opening session is followed by a launch party and reception sponsored by TCU Press at the Gordon House, 308 E. Pearl St.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wednesday night session and reception are free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of this year\u2019s Langdon Review<\/em> Weekend, listen to the 2016 Texas State Poet Laureate read from her vast collection of work, enjoy a dinner theater with SceneShop and find out more about Tui Snider, writer-in-residence for Langdon Review of the Arts in Texas<\/em>\u2014Tarleton\u2019s annual journal highlighting the most exciting cultural accomplishments in Texas and the energy behind the annual four-day-weekend festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snider is an award-winning author, speaker, photographer, and musician who promotes offbeat travel and regional history. Her bestseller, Unexpected Texas<\/em> (2014), is a quirky travel guide to overlooked places in the Lone Star state, and her latest book, The Lynching of the Santa Claus Bank Robber<\/em> (2015), is a strange-but-true tale from 1927. After living in several U.S. states as well as in Belgium, Italy, and on a tiny island with a population of seven, Snider followed her heart to Texas five years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sponsored by the Granbury Wine Walk, the writer-in-residence program provides two weeks of lodging in Granbury and an opportunity to become immersed in local culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enjoy a screening of Film Shorts by Peter Carlos<\/em> (2011) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Showbiz Cinema 6, 1201 Water\u2019s Edge Drive. Carlos is a professor of digital cinema arts at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., and a Fulbright Program scholar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At noon Friday, Sept. 9, Texas State Poet Laureate Laurie Ann Guerrero reads from her work during a picnic at the Brazos House Gardens, within easy walking distance of Granbury Square. A San Antonio native, Guerrero is author of A Crown for Gumecindo<\/em> (2015) and A Tongue in the Mouth of the Dying<\/em> (2013), winner of the Andres Montoya Poetry Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guerrero has served on the faculty at University of the Incarnate Word, University of Texas-El Paso, Palo Alto College, and Gemini Ink, a community-centered literary arts organization in San Antonio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s dinner and theater Friday evening at Barking Rocks Winery, 1919 Allen Court, featuring SceneShop. Since 1996, SceneShop has produced more than 100 new works\u2014scenes and monologues\u2014and presented them in a minimalist style, focusing on the essential communication between the playwright, the producing ensemble and the audience. Dinner begins at 6 p.m., with curtain time at 7:15 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A true Texas-size brunch kicks off the final day of Langdon Review<\/em> Weekend from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday on the lawn of the Concert Hall, featuring musician and chronicler Craig Clifford. Professor of philosophy and director of the Honors Programs at Tarleton State University, Clifford is a prolific songwriter who performs regularly with the Accidental Band. His songwriting reflects his Louisiana heritage and his Texas upbringing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Langdon Review<\/em> Weekend is coordinated by Drs. Marilyn Robitaille and Moumin Quazi, associate professors of English at Tarleton, with help from several benefactors, including The Inge Foundation, and community partners such as the city of Granbury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Registration for the entire weekend is $120 through Aug. 29 and includes all readings and activities\u2014except Thursday night\u2019s movie screening\u2014plus a copy of the 2016 Langdon Review of the Arts in Texas<\/em>. Movie tickets are $7.50 at the door. One-day passes and single-event tickets for the picnic, dinner and brunch are available.
