STEPHENVILLE, Texas\u2014Author and professor of history Dr. T. Lindsay Baker is the featured guest presenter at Tarleton State University\u2019s Dinner in the Stacks set for Saturday, Oct. 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The semi-annual event is organized by Friends of the Dick Smith Library and features food and door prizes. Friends of the Library members and the public are invited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The evening opens with appetizers at 6:30 in the library\u2019s foyer, followed by dinner at 7 and \u201cPortrait of Route 66,\u201d led by Baker and based on his recently released book\u2014Portrait of Route 66<\/em>\u2014featuring unknown photographs of U.S. Highway 66 from the archives of the former Curt Teich & Company postcard publishing company of Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baker will recount his adventures during two trips along the length of Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles and attempts to identify the locations recorded in historic photographs of roadside attractions and businesses from the 1920s to 1950s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The black-and-white photographs, featured in Portrait of Route 66<\/em>, were submitted to Teich by customers for the creation of color postcards in the years before the invention of color photography. Famed in movies, television and literature, the roadway received its numerical designation in 1926 and it survived into the 1980s, when interstate highways took its place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Menu for the dinner includes dishes created from recipes Baker collected from restaurants along Route 66.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reservations must be made no later than 5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 13. Tickets are $20 in advance for members of Friends of the Library and $25 for non-members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Established in 1990, the Friends of the Dick Smith Library is a volunteer organization dedicated to the support of the university\u2019s library. The organization funds the acquisition of educational amenities that lie outside of the library budget; help sponsors discussions, lectures, book talks, and other scholarly activities; and aids in the creation of endowments, bequests and other gifts to the university\u2019s library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
