STEPHENVILLE, Texas\u2014Join three Tarleton State University history professors Monday, Oct. 17, for a look at Demagogues in History and Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The free 50-minute event begins at 4:30 p.m. in the university\u2019s Fine Arts Theater on the Stephenville campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Michael Landis will explore the controversial career of President Andrew Jackson; Dr. Mattie Fitch will examine the rise of German Chancellor Adolf Hitler, and Dr. Chris Hickman will consider the life and legacy of Alabama Governor and Presidential aspirant George Wallace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDemagoguery and demagogues sadly have been a constant in human history,\u201d Landis said. \u201cJackson, Hitler and Wallace all employed demagogic tactics\u2014such as propaganda, lies, and hate-mongering\u2014to inflame the passions of the people and propel themselves to power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMoreover, as is the case with most demagogues, all three men portrayed themselves as virtuous \u2018outsiders\u2019 aiming to reform a corrupt government system,\u201d he pointed out. \u201cBy examining the careers of Jackson, Hitler and Wallace, we can better understand current manifestations of demagoguery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A question-and-answer session follows the event. Audience participation is encouraged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
