Storm Spotter Class Open to Public<\/p>\n

Friday, January 13, 2017<\/p>\n

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton State University and the National Weather Service (NWS) invite area residents to participant in a free basic SKYWARN® Spotter Training Class set from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 19.<\/p>\n

SKYWARN® is a volunteer program with nearly 290,000 trained severe weather spotters who help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports to the NWS.<\/p>\n

In addition to public safety communications practices and severe weather safety, Fort Worth NWS Office meteorologists will cover the basics of thunderstorm development, the fundamentals of storm structure, ways to identify potentially hazardous weather, and what types of information to report and how to report it. No pre-registration is required.<\/p>\n

The class takes place in Room 102 of the Dr. Lamar Johanson Science Building on the Tarleton campus. No advance registration is required.<\/p>\n

Since SKYWARN® started in the 1970s, information provided by storm spotters—coupled with Doppler radar technology, improved satellite and other data—has enabled the NWS to issue more timely and accurate warnings for tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and flash floods.<\/p>\n
