Tarleton Corps of Cadets Revive Ceremony<\/p>\n

Monday, January 23, 2017<\/p>\n

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton State University’s Corps of Cadets is resurrecting the University Retreat Ceremony to pay tribute to the nation, the U.S. flag and military veterans.<\/p>\n

The ceremony takes place at 5 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every month at the flag pole in the center of campus in front of the E.J. Howell Education Building. Ceremonies are set for Jan. 24, Feb. 21, March 21 and April 18.<\/p>\n

The Corps of Cadets will be in formation along Military Drive and, at 5 p.m., a trumpet solo of the Retreat<\/em> song, followed by To the Colors<\/em> will ring out across campus. A trumpeter, from Tarleton’s Department of Fine Arts—under the tutelage of Dr. Brian Walker—will play the songs during the Retreat Ceremony. A firing of the cannon also will take place. <\/p>\n

Students, faculty and staff within proximity of the ceremony are ask to stop, turn toward the flagpole and render proper courtesies while cadets slowly lower the American flag.<\/p>\n

“This ceremony is firmly rooted in U. S. military history—dating back to the Revolution—and provides an opportunity to show respect to the nation, the U.S. flag, and active soldiers, marines, sailors, airmen and coast guardsmen as well as those who have served their country in the past,” said Col. Kenny Weldon, Commandant of Cadets and Senior Director of Strategic Studies.<\/p>\n

The Texan Corps of Cadets was established in 1917 and is honored to bring this time honored tradition back to Tarleton, Weldon said. “This ceremony not only honors the American flag and the principles for which it stands, but allows students and community members to take pride in and experience this enduring patriotic tradition.”<\/p>\n
