Wells Gallery Presents

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, September 18, 2017

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Picture three-dimensional sculptures based on arcade experiences.

That’s what guests can expect to see when Tarleton State University’s Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Gallery kicks off its second exhibit of the season, featuring artist Nick Bontrager’s Alone Together: Contemporary Arcade, on Monday, Sept. 25.

The free exhibition is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through Oct. 20, with a lecture by the artist set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, in Room 101 of the fine arts center on the Stephenville campus.

“I’m going to show some drawings, some sculptures and some interactive small miniature works that have light, sound and video elements,” Bontrager said. “The works I’m showing are inspired by both the public and private space of arcade galleries and video games.”

Bontrager, an assistant professor of art at Texas Christian University, specializes in new media art. He describes himself as an interdisciplinary artist with work and research that explores the physical and conceptual nature of the moving image through game-based interactions

“Nick does a lot of digital fabrication,” said Chris Ireland, assistant art professor at Tarleton. “It’s kind of a cross between digital media and sculpture. He can take a digital form and have it printed in 3-D. It’s a creation of sculpture with a digital bend to it.”

Bontrager earned his master’s in fine arts from The Ohio State University for studies in art and technology and his bachelor’s degree at the University of Houston in photography and digital media.

“He has a national reputation,” Ireland said. “He’s worked with many great artists from across the United States, and I think it’s going to be good for students to see his work.”

For a complete lineup of Tarleton’s fall 2017 fine arts events, visit www.tarleton.edu/finearts.

Tarleton, celebrating 100 years as founding member of The Texas A&M University System, provides a student-focused, value-driven educational experience marked by academic innovation and exemplary service, and dedicated to transforming students into tomorrow’s professional leaders.
