STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton State University is recipient of the 2017 Outstanding Master’s Counselor Education and Supervision Program Award.<\/p>\n
Given by the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (SACES), the award recognizes the outstanding pre- and in-service training of Tarleton’s graduate degree program in clinical mental health counseling.<\/p>\n
The honor comes on the heels of the program’s recent endorsement by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. CACREP accreditation is among the highest commendations that an academic program can receive.<\/p>\n
Part of Tarleton’s College of Health Sciences and Human Services, the 60-hour master’s degree program prepares students for careers as licensed professional counselors in Texas. Degree curriculum includes classroom learning and true-to-life clinical experiences and internships consistent with state and national licensing and certification.<\/p>\n
Students intern at organizations such as MHMR of Tarrant County, Pecan Valley MHMR, Heart of Texas MHMR, Starry Counseling, The Warm Place, Mesa Springs Hospital, The Family Place and The Art Station Fort Worth. They also can complete internship hours at Tarleton’s Student Counseling Center on the Stephenville campus or at McLennan Community College in Waco.<\/p>\n
“Health Sciences and Human Services is committed to improving the overall well-being of the residents of Texas and beyond,” said Dr. David Weissenburger, interim dean of the college. “The SACES award and CACREP accreditation are clear indicators of our ability to fulfill this vision, providing the education and training our graduates in clinical mental health counseling need to provide the best care possible.<\/p>\n
“The award and accreditation also reflect the quality and dedication of faculty in the Department of Counseling,” he said. “Practicing licensed professional counselors, they promote the university’s high standards of excellence and student service.”<\/p>\n
