Berghuis Rides Into First Place at Sul Ross<\/p>\n

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — For the second straight week, the Tarleton State University women’s rodeo team captured first place.<\/p>\n

With two individual event champions at the Sul Ross State University Rodeo in Alpine, Tarleton accumulated 385 points to maintain the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) Southwest Region<\/a> lead.<\/p>\n

Lariat Larner posted a two-head time of 13.1 seconds to take her second consecutive goat tying win and teammate Rickie Engresser brought home the breakaway roping crown taking two calves in a speedy 5.4 seconds.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Mary Risse split second and third in goat tying with an aggregate 13.5 seconds, Abby Medlin was fourth with a 13.9-second time, and Hadley Butler was eighth after a 6.9 second run in the first round to qualify her for the finals in Alpine.<\/p>\n

Tarleton’s Maddy Dickens won the first round of the barrel racing competition and ended up in a tie for fourth place overall with a time of 33.58 seconds. Sam Smith was second in the long go and placed third overall with a 33.56-second time.<\/p>\n

The Tarleton women lead the regional standings with 725 points just two weeks into the 2018-19 season.<\/p>\n

Tarleton’s men’s team, led by defending national champion bareback rider Tyler Berghuis and tie-down roper Haven Meged, claimed second place at Alpine.<\/p>\n

Berghuis racked up 151 points on two bareback rides for first place in his event and teammate Jacob Springer placed sixth in the first round and ninth overall.<\/p>\n

Meged was also an event champion flashing a two-head time of 17.3 seconds. Tarleton’s Wyatt Williams and Wesley Sims wound up fifth and sixth respectively in tie-down roping.<\/p>\n

In saddle bronc riding, Jake Barnes added a short-go score of 76 to his opening round 75 for second place. Rhett Fanning made the finals with a 64 in the first round and finished in eighth place.<\/p>\n

Tarleton team roper Zach Kraus combined with Ranger College’s Tyler Stegall for third place, Pace Blanchard of Tarleton teamed up with Kade Sherwood of West Texas A&M for eighth and Tarleton’s Ty Ross teamed up with Sterling Cowdrey of Ranger College for 10th.<\/p>\n

The men have scored a combined 780 points and trail just Clarendon College in the regional standings after two weeks.<\/p>\n

Both teams will travel to Vernon this weekend for the third of five fall events.<\/p>\n
