STEPHENVILLE, Texas —Last week a delegation of students, faculty and staff members traveled to Austin as part of Tarleton State University’s biennial Day at the Capitol.<\/p>\n
Led by President F. Dominic Dottavio, the Tarleton delegation met with legislators and their staffs last Tuesday to increase university support during the 86th Legislative Session.<\/p>\n
“Coming to Austin as a group provides the unique opportunity to see democracy at work,” Dr. Dottavio said. “We are grateful for the hospitality of our legislators and the time spent with students, faculty and staff.”<\/p>\n
Student participation in Tarleton’s Day at the Capitol is a key component of the gathering. Tarleton has hosted a Day at the Capitol since the 84th<\/sup>Legislative Session, and Dr. Kyle McGregor, vice president of the Division of Institutional Advancement, says the importance of the event is hard to overstate.<\/p>\n “It’s all about relationships,” he said. “Elected officials want to know their constituents. Day at the Capitol is about providing our delegations the opportunity to interface with students, while providing students a snapshot of the legislative process.”<\/p>\n Stephenville and Erath County officials and civic leaders were on hand, as well, since Tuesday was Stephenville Day at the Capitol, too. The combined delegations heard from Rep. J.D. Sheffield (Dist. 59); Rep. DeWayne Burns (Dist. 58); Rep. Craig Goldman (Dist. 97) and Sen. Pat Fallon (Dist. 30).<\/p>\n “Some spoke of their experiences and others shared entertaining anecdotes and philosophies of leadership,” McGregor said. “Legislators regularly hear from university leadership and agency officials, but it is important that they hear the perspective of students as well.”<\/p>\n Tarleton, founding member of The Texas A&M University System, provides a student-focused, value-driven education marked by academic innovation and a dedication to transform today’s scholars into tomorrow’s leaders.
