STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton State University professors Dr. Thomas Faulkenberry and Dr. Scott Cook will work with minority undergraduate students in the summer Computational Mathematics at Tarleton program thanks to an almost $30,000 grant from the Mathematical Association of America and the National Science Foundation.<\/p>\n
Faulkenberry, assistant professor of psychology, and Cook, assistant professor of mathematics, will lead four students investigating problems in mathematical psychology and billiard dynamics.<\/p>\n
“This project represents the tangible beginning of some substantial collaborative research possibilities between the Department of Psychological Sciences and the Department of Mathematics,” Faulkenberry said. “I am very happy to get this project funded, as it allows us to not only highlight the interdisciplinary nature of mathematics, but also to work with some highly motivated undergraduates.”<\/p>\n
The grant award, under the auspices of the National Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program, provides support for students to do research full time for eight weeks during the summer.<\/p>\n
NREUP is designed to engage underrepresented students, specifically minorities, in the mathematical sciences to increase their interest in advanced degrees and position them for careers in mathematics.<\/p>\n
