Congressional Internship program. She received a scholarship this week for the semester-long study-away opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Petree, a native of Decatur, Texas, who&rsquo;s majoring in <a href=\"..\/..\/..\/socialwork\/index.html\">social work<\/a>, is also the first student from Tarleton&rsquo;s <a href=\"..\/..\/..\/chshs\/index.html\">College of Heath Sciences and Human Services<\/a> to be selected for the internship. She will spend the fall 2019 semester interning for U.S. Rep. Mike Conaway, congressman for the 11th&nbsp;District of Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Tarleton President F. Dominic Dottavio and Provost Karen Murray presented Petree with the $21,000 Washington D.C. Congressional Internship Scholarship, supported by funds from the <a href=\"..\/..\/..\/giving\/societies\/presidents-circle.html\">President&rsquo;s Circle<\/a>, <a href=\"..\/..\/..\/giving\/societies\/academic-circle-page.html\">Academic Circle<\/a> and Office of the Dean for the <a href=\"..\/..\/..\/colfa\/index.html\">College of Liberal and Fine Arts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is a significant scholarship, and we are very proud of you for being selected to represent the university in Washington D.C. You will be our ambassador in the congressman&rsquo;s office, and we consider this a very high honor,&rdquo; Dottavio told Petree during the scholarship presentation. &ldquo;I hope you take the core values of this university firmly planted in your heart and mind. I am confident that you will represent Tarleton well.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>During the congressional internship, Petree will work alongside the congressman&rsquo;s staff, answering constituents&rsquo; phone calls and visiting with guests to Conaway&rsquo;s offices, sorting mail, writing letters, attending hearings and gathering notes, and giving tours of the capitol.<\/p>\n<p>To receive the scholarship, students from Tarleton apply for the congressional internship program and undergo a committee review process. Committee members are&nbsp;<span>Drs. Jeff Breeden, Malcolm Cross, Karley Goen, Aaron George, John LeCounte, and Nathaniel Cogley, chair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To participate in the <a href=\"..\/..\/..\/dc-internship\/index.html\">Congressional Internship Program<\/a>, students must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average, have completed 60 semester credit hours of coursework and have completed core government and history courses.<\/p>\n<p>For more information or to apply for the 2020 Tarleton State University Washington D.C.
