STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Beginning with the 2020-21 school year, Tarleton State University will provide up to $34,000 in scholarships annually and guarantee admission to Alvarado High School seniors who graduate in the top 25 percent of their class.<\/p>\n

The Alvarado Independent School District and Tarleton leaders cemented the agreement with a memorandum signed at the Dec. 9 meeting of the ISD’s board of trustees.<\/p>\n

As part of the program, called the Distinguished High School Partnership, Tarleton will waive ACT (American College Test) or SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) requirements and application fees for students who qualify. The university will offer 20 scholarships of at least $1,000 each year to Alvarado’s top graduates.<\/p>\n

“This collaboration aligns with our mission to provide a high-quality experience to students in our own backyard,” said Tarleton President James Hurley. “Alvarado graduates flourish when they come to Tarleton. This makes it possible for more of them to be Tarleton Texans.”<\/p>\n

Tarleton is developing similar agreements with school districts in the region.<\/p>\n

“It was a historic night for our students, educators and the community,” said Dr. Kenneth Estes, superintendent of the Alvarado ISD. “We are extremely excited about this new partnership and humbled by the generosity of Dr. Hurley and Tarleton State University. Our students now have even greater access to the exceptional programs, degrees and professors of the greatest university, Tarleton State!”<\/p>\n

More than 300 Tarleton alumni call the Alvarado area home, and 57 Alvarado ISD teachers are Tarleton graduates.<\/p>\n
