{"id":26351,"date":"2020-04-24T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-24T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.tarleton.edu\/news\/tarleton-announces-residency-program-for-teachers\/"},"modified":"2025-10-07T09:36:30","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T14:36:30","slug":"tarleton-announces-residency-program-for-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/news\/tarleton-announces-residency-program-for-teachers\/","title":{"rendered":"Tarleton announces residency program for teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<\/p>\n<p>Friday, April 24, 2020<\/p>\n<p>STEPHENVILLE, Texas \u2014\u00a0The Tarleton State University College of Education has launched a one-year residency for undergraduate teacher candidates in collaboration with two local school districts and University-School Partnerships for the Renewal of Education Preparation (US PREP).<\/p>\n<p>Following a model promoted by US PREP and other national organizations, the residency is designed to provide a clinically robust, immersive experience to boost candidates\u2019\u00a0readiness to be first-year teachers.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the three-year, $300,000 grant-funded program, Tarleton teacher residents will be placed at elementary schools in the Granbury and Huckabay ISDs.<\/p>\n<p>Tarleton residents will work alongside a cooperating teacher and will have the support of a site coordinator who will link the district and the university.<\/p>\n<p>Benefits to the Tarleton students include the opportunity for extended, hands-on practice; part-time work in partner districts; and priority consideration for full-time employment.\u00a0District partners gain the advantage of \u201cgrowing their own\u201d and the opportunity to hire first-year teachers who have been mentored during a year of apprenticeship.<\/p>\n<p>Both Tarleton and district partners benefit from extensive communication, collaboration and data sharing embedded in the residency model.<\/p>\n<p>The US PREP National Center provides on-the-ground support and services\u00a0to a coalition of university-based teacher preparation programs. The coalition comprises 21 school-university partners with a common mission\u00a0of attracting, training and retaining high-quality, racially diverse teachers for underserved communities nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Tarleton State University is part of a Texas A&amp;M University System statewide campaign that encourages teaching as a career. A&amp;M System\u2019s 11 universities produce more fully certified teachers than other university system in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign, \u201cWe Teach Texas,\u201d affirms the role of teachers and notes that \u201cevery success story starts in a classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tarleton, founding member of The Texas A&amp;M University System, provides a student-focused, value-driven education marked by academic innovation and a dedication to transform today\u2019s scholars into tomorrow\u2019s leaders.
