{"id":25506,"date":"2021-05-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-12T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.tarleton.edu\/news\/tarleton-commencement-speaker-came-from-mexico-to-be-a-teacher\/"},"modified":"2025-09-22T16:45:40","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T21:45:40","slug":"tarleton-commencement-speaker-came-from-mexico-to-be-a-teacher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tarleton.edu\/news\/tarleton-commencement-speaker-came-from-mexico-to-be-a-teacher\/","title":{"rendered":"Tarleton Commencement Speaker Came from Mexico to be a Teacher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday, May 12, 2021<\/p>\n<p>STEPHENVILLE, Texas \u2014 Krisol Villa Flores is driven.<\/p>\n<p>She wanted to be a teacher so badly, she daily commuted an hour each way to Tarleton State University\u2019s Waco campus to take classes.<\/p>\n<p>A native of Chihuahua, Mexico, Krisol came to the United States eight years ago, not knowing English but having a determination to succeed.<\/p>\n<p>And succeed she has.<\/p>\n<p>She will take the stage Saturday morning at Tarleton\u2019s Memorial Stadium to deliver the commencement address to graduates from the College of Education and the College of Science and Technology.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing her little girl at a distinct educational disadvantage gave Krisol that initial push to serve in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever I sent my daughter to school for the first time, my heart was breaking,\u201d Krisol said.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cSeeing her and the other children, I decided to do something to help them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She enrolled at McLennan Community College with an eye toward becoming a bilingual teacher, even though she couldn\u2019t speak a word of English. \u201cI decided I needed to come here for myself and my family. I started at MCC, and while I was there I learned about the Tarleton education program.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other universities were close to where she was living, but they didn\u2019t offer the future she wanted for herself, her daughter and her family, most of whom still live in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really blessed to have decided to go to Tarleton,\u201d she said. \u201cThey embraced my culture. They celebrate different cultures. They provide a great educational experience, and they send you to the field, to different schools and different grades, to allow you to have the experience of what it looks like, what it feels like to interact with a lot of different kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following her graduation, Krisol will take a position as a first- and second-grade bilingual teacher in the Waco Independent School District. She\u2019s confident her training at Tarleton has readied her for the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not easy, but the professors do a really good job of preparing us. They guide you through the whole process. They listen and they offer amazing support. That\u2019s why I chose Tarleton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her commencement address she will share some of the details of her life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll tell my story.
