History of Kinesiology

The oldest branch member of the Texas A&M University system, Tarleton State University has a rich history and culture regarding both athletics and academics. At the center of Tarleton State University’s heritage is the Kinesiology academic program. The history of Kinesiology at Tarleton State University can be traced back to 1921. During the 1921-1922 academic year, the department consisted of two persons and was titled the Department of Physical Education. During the early years, Kinesiology faculty and athletic coaches were one in the same. Therefore, the individuals that led students in the classroom also led student athletes to great successes on the athletic fields and beyond. Throughout the history of Kinesiology at Tarleton State University, there have been several iconic figures regarding athletics, military history, civil rights, and academia in general pass through the organization’s doors. Today, an internal enrollment of over 1,000 students makes the School of Kinesiology the largest academic unit at Tarleton State University. Thousands of Tarleton State University Kinesiology alumni have and are serving their Texas communities as coaches, physical educators, personal trainers, sport lawyers, doctors, athletic administrators, and in many other professions.
