International Student Orientation

As an international student under F-1 and J-1 status, it is important that you are aware of the immigration regulations and responsibilities that may affect your academic status while you are in the United States. For this reason, our international student orientation is divided in two parts:

  1. Online Orientation through CANVAS
  2. Face-to-Face Check In with DSO

The following groups of international students are required to complete the Online Orientation:

  • All new international students under F-1 or J-1 status. This applies if you are changing to a new academic level (e.g., Bachelor's to Master's).
  • Current or returning F-1 students who will go through a Reinstatement process or re-entry to regain lawful F-1 status.
  • Returning international students who have taken a leave of absence from Tarleton State University and wish to resume enrollment.

Online Orientation

The online orientation will be accessible through CANVAS once you have registered for classes under "My Communities."

The online orientation consists of various sections regarding student and academic life, as well as immigration resources and compliance. You will be required to review each section in the given order and complete a quiz at the end of the orientation with a passing grade of 80% or higher to receive credit for this orientation requirement.

Failure to satisfactorily complete the Online Orientation will result in a hold being placed on your account which will prevent you from registration next term.

Face-to-Face Check In

The second part of your orientation will be in a face-to-face capacity. During the check in, we will answer any questions you may have and provide you additional information and resources for the following topics:

  • Immigration Responsibilities
  • Maintaining Status
  • Important contacts on campus
  • Health Insurance (you will receive your insurance card and additional information)
  • Tax obligations

The Department of Homeland Security of the U.S. requires Tarleton State University to report your arrival to campus. You are required to physically check-in with a Designated School Official (DSO) as soon as possible after arriving in the United States and no later than the start of classes. Please contact your DSO at immigration@tarleton.edu and schedule a meeting. You will need to bring the following documents to your immigration check-in:

  • Signed Tarleton-issued Form I-20
  • All previous issued Form I-20s
  • Passport
  • F-1 visa
  • I-94 – 
  • Current U.S. address and phone number

Failure to report to a Designated School Official is considered a violation of your immigration status and could result in termination of your SEVIS record. Familiarize yourself with your responsibilities as an international student by completing the Online Orientation.
